菊畑茂久馬は戦後の日本美術における最重要作家の一人とされ、生涯福岡を拠点に制作を続けました。
1983年に発表された伝説的シリーズ「天動説」は約3年間に16点構成による作品群をはじめ幾つかの連大作として制作されました。1950年代末に「反芸術」の旗手、戦後美術のホープとして注目されながらも自ら中央画壇から遠ざかり時流のながれから距離を置くことで独自の絵画を追求しました。
その19年間の沈黙から満を持して生まれた ‘キャンパスから棒が突き出た’ 新たな作品は東京画廊で発表され画壇に衝撃を与えました。一見モノトーンで統一され物体を内包するような大作シリーズは綿密に画面構成され、より画面に深化した絵画表現へと変貌していきます。
1986年以降の「月光」「海道」「海」「舟歌」「天河」「春風」シリーズなど次々と発表された菊畑作品の絵画思想を読み解くうえでも「天動説」は最も貴重なシリーズと言えます。
今展が皆様の菊畑作品への回顧として新たな魅力の発見となれば幸甚に存じます。

Mokuma Kikuhata is regarded as one of the most important artists in postwar Japanese art, and spent his life based in Fukuoka.
The legendary series "Ptolemaic Theory", announced in 1983, was produced as a series of works, including a group of 16 works, in about three years. At the end of the 1950s, he put himself away from the central art society as a standard-bearer of "anti-art" to pursue uniqueness even though he was epected to be a hope of post-war art.
After 19 years of silence, his new work "a stick sticking out of the canvas'' was unveiled at the Tokyo Gallery and shocked the art society. The large-scale series, which seems to be unified in monotone containing objects, is meticulously composed and transformed into a more profound pictorial expression on the screen. In order to interpret "Moonlight", "Coastal Road", "Sea", "Chantey", "Heavenly River", and "Spring Breeze" which have been unveiled since 1986, "Ptolemaic Theory" is the most important series.
We hope that this exhibition will serve as a retrospective of Kikuhata's work, and that it will lead to the new discovery of his work.
